Even though the struggle of LGBT people to claim their rights is constantly growing, homophobia still weighs heavily in many territories. Nearly 70 countries still prohibit homosexuality, even punishing it with the death penalty.
For the writing of this article, we relied on a study conducted by the bloggers Asher Lyric which ranks all the countries in the world from the most dangerous to the safest for the LGBT community. We have compiled a list of the most homophobic countries, unfortunately the list is much longer. We invite you to consult the Asher&Lyric study for more detailed information on the ranking and the criteria that make it up.
Travel safer, don’t go to these countries !
Russia :
If Europe is the continent that has the most LGBT friendly countries, it should be noted that it also carries some dead weight like Russia. Even if this huge country is positioned on two continents, we place it in Europe because this is the sector we focus on. Russia ranks 132nd in the ranking because it does not provide any rights or protection to the LGBT community, less than 25% of the Russian population says that the quality of life is not good. At the same time, when the law prevents pro-LGBT discussions and violence against minorities is commonplace. A country to avoid if you want to do tourism.
Afghanistan :
Homosexuality is taboo there. Under the strong influence of religion, sexual practices other than within a hetero marriage are considered indecent and are criminalized. Life imprisonment and the death penalty are still in force for homosexual practices
Brunei :
Le Brunei est le pays le plus homophobe de la planète. Depuis 2019 l’homosexualité y est punissable par la mort par lapidation. Avant cela, tout acte homosexuel même privé était passible de 10 ans de prison. Petit pays mais sanction démesurée.
Malaysia :
Even if the landscapes of Malaysia make you dream, we do not advise you to stay there. Indeed, homosexuality is illegal there and the law condemns it to prison or even death penalty. In 2017, the Ministry of Health even organized a competition of propaganda video against homosexuality.
Egypt :
While tourism is in full swing, Egypt is the country that imprisons the most gay people in the world. Even if homosexuality is not illegal, it is not tolerated. Egyptians do not hesitate to persecute, arrest and imprison members of the LGBT community under the pretext that they adopt a debauched behavior.
Nigeria :
In this African country homosexuality is illegal. 12 states have adopted Sharia law which makes any homosexual act punishable by death by stoning, for the rest of the country, members of the LGBT community risk 14 years in prison. It is an extremely repressive country with no legal protection against discrimination.
